Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can have life threatening consequences.
Alberta Health Services offers two eating disorder programs, which are free of charge– one in Edmonton, and one in Calgary. Both require a referral from a family doctor. To help facilitate effective communication with your family doctor, we recommend using our checklist to guide the conversation.
You can also search the Find a Physician site at the College of Family Physicians. You can filter by TOWN/CITY. The colours on the left side indicate if they are: accepting patients (Green), require referrals (Yellow) or aren’t accepting patients (Red). The University of Alberta Eating Disorder program treats many of the individuals they see as outpatients and day patients, in addition to the 12 patients who receive a hospital bed and are treated through the inpatient program. Approaches to Treatment of Eating Disorders
A team approach seems to work best for the treatment of eating disorders. It is recommended that you work with your family doctor to create a cohesive treatment team. You may find this guide helpful to work with your family doctor. Private psychologists, counselors, dietitians and others may list eating disorders as one of the areas they provide service. Fees will apply with private practitioners, but some may offer a sliding scale.
There are many different approaches to treating eating disorders. Research supports that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is effective to treat bulimia and binge eating disorder. Family Based Therapy (FBT) is the preferred method to treat eating disorders in youth and children. It has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of anorexia, regardless of the age of the patient.
