Eating Disorders & Fitness Feb 1-7, 2018

We are beginning work already to prepare for Eating Disorders Awareness Week, February 1-7, 2018. This year, in addition to our general awareness-raising activities and events, we would like to focus on building capacity within the fitness world about eating disorders and compulsive exercising.
We have circulated a survey to many fitness professionals to gather their feedback and the results are very interesting.
Of the 76 responses, the results showed:
-70% didn’t feel adequately prepared to initiate conversation with a client with a suspected eating disorder or compulsive exercising
– 59% didn’t know where to turn for resources
– 57% didn’t feel they knew the warning signs of eating disorders or compulsive exercising
Most thought it would be “very useful” to have information on eating disorders, warning signs, resources and how to support recovery in clients. In terms of format for content delivery, there was a strong desire for either a half-day workshop or an online video/webinar.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey. We will using this valuable feedback to build events in February to support fitness professionals in Alberta.
